How much should you weigh? Do you have a clue? Most people don’t. Everyone I meet is weighing in at 5, 10 or 15 pounds more than they’d like, but when I ask how much they should weigh to be considered “healthy,” they don’t have an answer.
As a dietitian, we come across a lot of handy tools. This one is among my favorite and it’s about the easiest rule-of-thumb calculation to see how much an average man or woman should weigh. Note: If you’re an NFL player, bodybuilder or CrossFit competitor (all have more muscle mass per height than the average person), this tool won’t work for you. But for most individuals, this is a perfectly good tool to use to get fairly close to your ideal weight.
We give a plus or minus 10% on this tool because it’s not taking into account how much of your weight is from fat.
The easiest how much should you weigh calculator:
To calculate, use:
Women: 100 pounds for 5 feet and 5 pounds per inch for every inch over 5 feet.
Men: 106 pounds for 5 feet then 6 pounds per inch for every inch over 5 feet.
5′ 6″ woman: 100 pounds for 5 feet plus 30 pounds for 6 inches= 130 pounds
6′ male: 106 pounds for the first 5 feet then 72 pounds for 12 inches over 5 feet = 172 pounds
