Fall is the season for great pears—early varieties are showing up in the markets now. Ten readers will win fresh fall pears—a beautiful 7 pound medley box!
As you know, we are big fans of fresh pears (and fresh fruit in general, of course). And, as much as we think apples are great, it’s nice to mix it up a bit with a juice fresh pear. Early season pears, such as Starkrimson and Bartlett are showing up at the markets now. Pears are an excellent source of fiber (and almost all of us need more of that). They are also a good source of vitamin C, have only about 100 calories per medium pear (perfect for a snack), and are naturally sodium and fat-free.
The thing with pears is that they need to be ripened at home because they are one of the few fruits that does not ripen on the tree. Here’s how: simply leave them at room temperature for a couple days. (If you need them for a recipe on a specific day though, be sure to purchase them a couple days ahead of time so you can make sure they’re ready on time. Oh, and if you want some recipe inspiration, check out the recipes on the USA Pears website…a nice fall pear salad would be perfect now, right?.) Check pears daily for ripeness by pressing at the “neck” of the pear, where the stem is; if it yields to gently pressure, it’s ripe, sweet and juicy. That’s it! Once ripe, you can slow additional ripening by putting them in the fridge. This is never a problem at my house though because once they are ripe they get eaten immediately. Plus, they usually aren’t all perfectly ripe on exactly the same day.
