A dozen tasty, healthful oatmeal squares could be yours (think how handy they’ll be for on-the-go eating this busy season)—enter today for your chance to win Corazonas Oatmeal Squares!

If you’re not familiar with Corazonas, here’s the essential info: Ramona Cappello founded the company in 2005 after losing her father and both grandfathers to heart disease. She watched her dad have to give up tasty snacks for the sake of heart-healthy eating and decided to do something about it. Corazonas Foods was born, and their snack products are infused with plant sterols, which have been shown in many clinical studies to help lower LDL cholesterol (that’s the bad kind).

What exactly are plant sterols, you ask? They are naturally-occurring compounds that we get every day from our regular diet when we eat fruits, veggies, whole grains and vegetable oils. We also can get them in foods to which they’re added (such as these oatmeal squares, or some margaine-spread products). In the right amounts, plant sterols can inhibit the intestine’s absorption of LDL cholesterol so much less gets into the bloodstream. The levels that occur naturally in these foods, however, are not high enough to bring about a significant effect on blood cholesterol.

Cranberry Flax flavor  Corazonas Oatmeal Squares contain 13 grams of whole grain, 6 grams of fiber, 6 grams of protein, and 0.8 grams of plant sterols per serving. They are also low in sodium, weigh in at 180 calories and contain about the same amount of sugar as most granola bars. They are not gluten-free (though Corazonas tortilla chips are). Best part? They’re berry moist, chewy and packed with dried cranberries! (Like how I snuck that “berry” thing in at the end?)Corazonas Logo

My family would go to learn about cranberries at Ocean Spray, and watch them harvest them. My mother would make so many different things with cranberries. Her favorite was cranberry pie. My mother has gone on to glory, but she has left a very healthy love for this sweet jewel, the cranberry. I hope I am passing that same love on to my family. Seems to be heading that way seeing as my children are forever asking for cranberry sauce, and they love cranberry chocolate chip cookies! Thanks!
