Ok, I’ll admit it. I play favorites with nuts. Go ahead and call me picky, (I prefer “particular”) but I can’t help but be partial to pecans. They are so tasty, so versatile and yeah—they’re darn healthful, too!
Think there’s no place for pecans in your diet? Think again. Research of national health survey data show that the consumption of tree nuts (including pecans) is associated with improved nutrient intake and diet quality. In fact, consumers of nuts were found to have higher intakes of several important nutrients, including fiber (something most of us don’t get enough of), as well as several vitamins and minerals including magnesium, potassium, calcium and vitamin A, C and E. Nut eaters also tend to have lower BMI values (aka body mass index, a ratio of body weight relative to height).
The US Dietary Guidelines suggest eating four to five servings of nuts each week. Beside snacking on pecans, you might be looking for ways to utilize pecans in your cooking. The GA Pecan Commission website has a plethora of pecan recipes to choose from. You’ll also find tips on selecting pecans and storing them at home to keep them fresh and tasty—I keep some in the freezer so they don’t all get eaten before I can use them in a recipe!
If you have a penchant for pecans and want to try and win one of our 10 Pecan Prize Packs, here’s what you need to do: Leave a comment below this post telling us about your favorite way to eat pecans (I LOVE candied pecans, and yes I know they have sugar, but I ration them out on salads, etc so I figure I’m entitled). THEN, “Like” Appetite for Health on Facebook AND “Like” the Georgia Pecan Commission on Facebook as well. If you REALLY want to show us some love by sharing one of the articles or images on this blog on Facebook, Reddit or Pinterest—tell us about that in your comment as well. Extra points are give to those who like to share any AFH post with their friends via social media like Facebook, Pinterest or Reddit.
