Need a snack to munch on at the beach? At the pool? To stash in kids’ lunches for day camp this summer? Consider Season’s Snacks Popped Black Bean Crisps.
I got some of these in the mail recently from the company (Natural Snacks) and immediately wondered what I was in for—I mean, how do they pop a black bean? And more importantly, how do these things taste?
I’ll get to the taste in a minute, I promise! First I first want to tell you about the ingredients. As I started to munch on these, I glanced at the ingredient list and, well, it made me happy. For a snack product, these have a nice, clean ingredient list—and low and behold, black beans are indeed the first ingredient!
These crisps provide 120 calories for a 1-ounce serving, 140 mg sodium, 3g of fiber and 4g of protein—pretty good for a snack, and the serving size is a very generous 17 crisps (due to the fact that they are popped and hence, very light). They do contain 4g of fat, but none of it is saturated, and there are no trans fats (and compared to some other similar snacks, this is substantially less fat). All in all, these are a respectable snack. Season’s Snacks boasts the following about all their products:
- All natural ingredients
- No preservatives
- No artificial colorings
- No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils
- No monosodium glutamate
- Wheat- and gluten-free
Ok, now for the sensory part…Upon opening the first package, I was struck by the fact that these look a lot like mini rice cakes, though their aroma is definitely more “beany” (more of a savory “protein smell,” for all you food techies out there). Because they are not colored artificially, they are, as you would expect, a rather subdued brownish-black color. I am not into neon-bright food tints, so this suits me just fine. They’re very crunchy, which is nice, and the flavors they’ve chosen are pretty darn tasty. I preferred the Roasted Red Pepper variety best, but they are also available in Sea Salt and Nacho flavors. Incidentally, the company also sent me some of their Baked Cheddar Cheese Puffs and Cheddar Cheese Curls and they were dead ringers for the traditional snacks my kids beg for but never get (hence, they were thrilled to get to try these)!
