Give your pasta pot a break this summer, and enter to win our Barilla giveaway. Ten of our Appetite for Health friends will win a week’s worth of lunches (7 Barilla Microwaveable Meals) plus an insulated lunch tote (total value of $30). For entry details, see below.
We know you crave pasta sometimes (who doesn’t?). If you’d rather keep your pasta portions in check, these new meals from Barilla, Italy’s #1 brand of pasta, could be just what you needed. Perfect to tote to work, these heat-and-eat entrees make a pasta lunch an easy reality—no pasta pot, no boiling water or steamy kitchen required!
Barilla sent me several of these meals to taste-test, and being the generous soul that I am, I shared them. Both of my kids, as well as my friend’s college-aged son and I thought they were darn tasty. The portion is not skimpy, and yet the meals are all 320 calories or less! That’s a good thing, as pasta is one of those foods that’s easy to over-consume. Some of the varieties are made with whole grain pasta, and they all provide between 9 and 11g of protein, and a good dose of fiber (the one I had was whole grain and provided 11g fiber). If you added a small side-salad and a piece of fruit, these entrees would make a well-rounded, appropriately-sized lunch that would keep you satisfied.
Sometimes I think that microwaveable entrees have too much sauce, but with these, you get to add just as much or as little sauce as you like. Barilla has used some cool packaging technology that separates the sauce from the pasta for cooking, and then lets you mix in as much as you like. I used nearly the entire amount of sauce provided, but my anti-sauce pre-teen daughter was thrilled to be able to top hers with just a dollop of the sauce—only enough to flavor the sauce.
These new Barilla Microwaveable Meals come in the following five varieties:
- Mezze Penne with Tomato & Basil Sauce
- Mezze Penne with Traditional Marinara Sauce
- Mezze Penne with Spicy Marinara Sauce
- Whole Grain Fusilli with Vegetable Marinara Sauce
- Whole Grain Mezze Penne with Tomato & Basil Sauce

Hello AFH, i’m in Dubai trying to eat healthy. Produce here is outrageous and doesn’t look as good as American produce. I love pasta, had a pasta bake last night. I’m ready to come home and eat some Whole Grain Mezze Penne with Tomato & Basil Sauce, it’s sounds delicious. Hope all is well Julie, Katherine, and Kat. See you soon, have more tanning to do now.

I like you both on Facebook and I think it’s important to know how to say “I love you” in any language
Ti amo! (I love you!)
Ti voglio bene. (I love you a lot.)
Ti voglio molto bene. (I love you very much.)
Mi piaci molto. (I really like you.)
Ti adoro. (I adore you.)
Ti voglio. (I love you.)
These would be quick, simple and handy to take with me so that I could have a decent lunch between my lecture class and lab class – time is kind of tight.
