Frozen Berries

BerriesProduce prices are soaring these days, but one place you can find a real nutritional bargain is in the frozen foods section of your supermarket.

Grocery stores today have a wide variety of frozen fruit, and berries are one of the best bargains. I can get frozen blackberries, blueberries (wild and traditional), red raspberries and strawberries. Many new and old brands can be found, including sotre-brands along with Dole, Birds Eye and Cascadian Farm.

I’ve been buying several brands that don’t have no or little added sugar.  I like Safeway’s unsweetened berries as well as their O Organics frozen berries. I’ve bought frozen fruit from Trade Joe’s as well as Cascadian Farm, Dole, Stahlbush Island Farms and they’re great too. Frozen BerriesMost will have just about 40-50 calories per 1-cup serving, and pack in plenty of nutrition, including fiber, potassium, vitamin C and the important phytonutrients.

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a healthy taste of summer!

    When I visit my parents’ farm in the summer and fall, I always check to see what is ripe for the picking…I bring home blackberries, cherries, apples, pears, and all kinds of vegetables from the garden. I am lucky enough to fill a small freezer full of fresh produce each year that I get from my parents’ farm. I enjoy it until the next season! I also buy fresh blueberries, in season, when they are on sale and freeze them on a cookie sheet before transferring them to plastic bags. These are economical ways I find to keep fruits and vegetables in my family’s diet.

    I always try to have frozen fruit in my freezer. I recently tried a recipe for a mixed berry syrup that I put on top of buckwheat pancakes. It was really yummy!

    I just have to add… I am very jealous (in a great way) of Nancy’s post above. What an incredible gift to have parents with a farm! :-)

    Thanks Julie. You reminded me to start making smoothies again. I love using different frozen fruits and making a smoothie for breakfast. Haven’t been making them lately, so plan to stock up on some frozen fruits when I grocery shop this week. Yum!!!
