Just because I’m a registered dietitian, it doesn’t mean that I don’t have taste buds. I most certainly do! Fortunately I tend to gravitate towards lighter, healthier fare the majority of the time. But sometimes there are those special occasions or events that call for, shall we say, ‘less-than-healthy’ eating. Well, last night was one of those nights as I was invited to attend the 2010 Burger Bash hosted by Rachael Ray at the South Beach Food & Wine Festival in Miami, FL. I have to admit, this was a pretty amazing event and I am not even a big burger person. It took place right on the beach. 27 burgers, from some of the top restaurants in the nation, were featured for this annual competition to see who has the country’s best burger. Restaurants including David Burke’s Primehouse from Chicago, Toro from Boston, Shake Shack from NYC, Love Shack from Fort Worth, and Morimoto from NYC were all there to showcase their best burger stuff. I voted for what turned out to be the 2010 winner: B Spot from Cleveland, OH.
This burger may sound gross (I certainly thought it did from the description) but let me tell you it was the best burger I’ve ever had. Aptly named the “Fat Doug”, it was topped with Swiss, Pastrami and Coleslaw. Yikes! Not a recipe for healthy eating. But life is all about balance after all… so I balanced out a lot of my healthy stuff with a real indulgence. I made amends the today by taking a 4 mile walk along the beautiful boardwalk on South Beach.
